Mid East students design banner for Byesville Rotary

Owen Williams, Commercial Art instructor at Mid East, accompanied by students Evan Gamble and Laney Steele, presented finalized designs for a Rotary banner to the members of the Byesville Rotary Club. Four designs were presented. Club members agreed that all the designs were good and that it will be hard to make a choice.

Williams explained that one of the goals of Mid East is to provide hands-on, real life business experience for students. One of the best ways to help students develop necessary business skills is to provide business services to members of the local community.

Byesville Rotary’s request for Mid East to design a new banner for the club is typical of some requests. Like many businesses and organizations, Rotary International is proprietary about their logo and wants it displayed and used in specific ways. Byesville Rotary provided the commercial art students with Rotary International requirements for an official logo. These requirements specified the font and colors to be used as well as limits on the placement of the Rotary wheel in relation to the name of the club. Mid East students were asked to use their creativity to design a banner following the requirements as well as one that would be unique to Byesville Rotary.

Williams explained that the all companies and organizations need photos, logos and other graphic services. Mid East students can design logos, edit photography and other types of images, and design marketing and advertising graphics. Services are offered to non-profits for a minimal fee--typically for the cost of materials. Modest labor costs are included with materials costs for local businesses.

In addition to providing practical experience to develop business skills, Williams pointed out that Mid East offers other pluses to students. A student is encouraged to focus on his/her passion; and is able to share with and be stimulated by interacting with students with the same interests. Mid East also provides a fresh start for students who may have had difficulties in high school. Mid East classes are designed to give students a head start on a career or college.

Wilson concluded that in the future the commercial art program plans to add classes teaching students how to design web pages.

Byesville Rotary learns Hospice helps both patients and families

Pictured: Jenna Conaway, PR Coordinator for Hospice of Guernsey, and Shana Fair, Byesville Rotary President.

Jenna Conaway, PR Coordinator for Hospice of Guernsey, described Hospice as a non-profit organization that has been serving Guernsey, Noble, and western Belmont Counties for 30 years.
Conaway explained that Hospice provides comfort care to people as they near the ends of their lives and helps family members deal with grief.

Hospice is able to provide services because it has local community support. Conaway pointed out that all funds raised locally are used to help local patients and their families. Fundraisers planned for 2016 include “Touch a Truck” at Deerasic Park. Participants can explore all kinds of vehicles and participate in face painting and raffles. There will also be a “Flamingo 5K” and a 1 mile memorial walk. Admission is free. All donations collected at the event will support bereavement counseling and a three day “Kids’ Kamp” held during the summer and open to all kids 6 thru 12 suffering from a loss.

Conaway explained that terminally ill patients typically need support dealing with a spectrum of issues involving physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs. She stated that needs are best met with a team approach. The Hospice team consists of a medical director, 12 nurses, 6 home help aides, 3 social workers, pastoral services, therapists who provide reflexology, art, and music therapy and a non-clerical office staff.

The Hospice provides services to people with all types of illnesses. Conaway told the Byesville club, “In 2014 Hospice provided care to over 200 people. Over 60% were dealing with diseases other than cancer.

Conaway stated that volunteers are a vital part of the services provided by Hospice. They provide much of the energy behind Hospice fundraisers. New volunteers are always welcome. Each new volunteer is asked to attend 6 class sessions. The next class begins April 5.

How does a patient or a family member request hospice services. The process begins with a referral from someone—not necessarily a doctor. The referral will result in a visit from a social worker who will explain what Hospice provides.
