Byesville Rotary goes Wild

Pictured: Brock Gorrell, Director of Park Operations at the Wilds; and Sharon Miller, Speaker Host.

Brock Gorrell, Director of Park Operations at the Wilds, described how club members could have wild and exciting adventures without traveling out of the state of Ohio. The Wilds--one of the largest conservation centers in the United States--provides homes to rare and endangered animals from far-away places such as Mongolia, India, Africa, China, Australia, and the plains of the United States.

Gorrell pointed out that a person does not need to get a passport, spend thousands of dollars and stand in long security lines at an airport in order to see foreign and exotic animals. The Wilds offers several different types of safaris ranging from $20--$150. The safaris include the Safari Transport—a ride through the park in an air-conditioned vehicle, the Open-Air Safari, or a Horseback Safari. Special Sunset Safaris which include a buffet dinner with spectacular views of the park are also available.

Gorrell stated that people who want to experience multiple adventures in one season can purchase a family membership for $125. A family membership includes free Safari Transport and Open Air Safaris as well as discounts on most of the other adventures. In addition, lodging at the Wilds is available. Visitors can stay in their personal yurt at Nomad Ridge. The yurts overlook the animal pastures and a stay includes dinner and breakfast for two. Additional lodging is available in the Lodge—a luxury cabin with space for up to 12 people. Wireless internet is available at all lodging.

Kids can have their own adventures by registering for one of the Wildcamps for kids. Camps last from 3 to 7 days. Kids will stay in yurts. The programs are a combination of fun activities and education.

In other business, Chuck Fair, Chicken BBQ chair, reported that the date for the first BBQ has been scheduled for Saturday, June signing for a shift and help make this BBQ a success.

Byesville Rotary holds 30th annual fundraiser for scholarships

Pictured: Tournament winners Matt Miller, Damon Moore., and Jordan Wheeler.

Byesville Rotary held its 30th Scholarship Golf tournament. All proceeds from the tournament are used to provide scholarships for Meadowbrook High School students. Larry Miller, chair of the event, stated that, “During the last 30 years the club has given out a total $68,000 in scholarships to Meadowbrook students.”

The club has also established a foundation to ensure there will be support for scholarships in the future. Any funds generated by the tournament in excess of funds needed to provide the 2016 scholarships are deposited in the foundation. As the foundation grows, club members hope to be able to provide more and larger scholarships.

Winners of the 2016 tournament are Jordan Wheeler, Matt Miller, and Damon Moore. In addition to the first place prize of $300, this year each player in the tournament had 2 chances to win $5000. In order to win, a golfer had to make a hole in one at one of the designated $5000 cash holes.

The Rotary club also presented a prize for second place as well as prizes for the longest putt, the longest drive, longest putt on hole 18, and closest to the pin on the par three holes.
