Larry Miller, Chair of the Annual Scholarship Golf Scramble, is recruiting sponsors for the event. This will be the 29th year the club has hosted this event. To date, the event has raised over $66,000 in scholarships for Meadow Brook seniors who pursue higher education.

For a $100.00 contribution, a company or organization can sponsor a hole at the event. If a cash contribution is not possible at this time, a prize or gift in your company's name would be appreciated.

Golfers are invited to form 3 person teams. The fee is $55.00 per player; $165.00 per team. Pay by April 24 and get the "Early Bird Special"--a $5.00 discount for each player. Make checks out to "Byesville Rotary." The prize for First Place $300.00; for Second Place is $200.00.

The event will be held Sunday, May 3, at Wildfire Golf course in New Concord. Registration will begin at 7:30 am. There will be a shotgun start at 8:00 am. Hot dogs and beverages will be available at the turn. Dinner will be catered by TJ's Market.

Byesville Rotary introduced to REM of Ohio services

Scott Dettra and Jackie Buydos, Job Developers, from REM of Ohio introduced Byesville Rotary to the services they provide to individuals with developmental disabilities. Dettra stated that the goal of REM is to “…help individuals have a good life, hold down a job, earn a salary, and integrate into the community.”

Buydos pointed out that REM is working with Guernsey County Board of Developmental Disabilities (GCDD) and Guernsey Industries meet a state mandate requiring workshops to integrate individuals using workshop services into the local business com.

Dettra stated that REM offers a 12 week vocational skills program meeting 5 days a week. One hour each day offers pre-vocational training covering basic skills employers expect potential employees to have. Topics covered include how to interact with other people, fill out forms, clock in and out, and dress for interviews as well as practice interviewing in mock interviews.

Four hours a day is spent at a business location where trainees learn and apply job skills specific to a particular job. This hands-on training occurs in many types of work environments such as retail, office, hotel, restaurant, or car dealership. The hands-on training allows trainees to explore different types of careers as well as discover what each person is good at. Dettra pointed out that recruit local businesses to provide training sites.

Buydos explained that after trainees master the skills taught in the 12 week program, REM staff helps the trainees find a job and prepare for the interview. REM also provides job coaches to trainees to help the new employee settle into his/her new job. REM considers trainee successful when they have held a job for 3 months. Job coaches remain available to provide additional job training support if the new employees job changes.

Buydos and Dettra are proud to report that graduates of their program have a higher productive rate that the worker and are considered very dependable. Dettra reported that REM began their first job development program in Cambridge with 8 trainees. Three of their trainees now have jobs in the community.

Marcus Brailer, Executive Director of Guernsey Industries, spoke to Byesville Rotary about changes at the adult workshop section of Guernsey Industries. He stated that “…the changes will be invisible to the families and individuals using Guernsey Industries services and will help each individual improve his/her quality of life.”

Brailer believes that each individual using the services of the adult workshop is capable of accomplishing more and, with training and support, can develop to his/her full potential. The first step toward developing a training plan is to start with the individual and ask questions such as “What do you want to do with your life?”and “What do you like doing at Guernsey Industries?”

Using the answer to these questions as a guide, individuals using Guernsey Industries services work with staff from Guernsey County DD to develop an individualized plan aimed at identifying the skills he or she needs to reach the goals each has established. Each of the goals identified is aimed at maximizing the person’s potential and at improving skills contributing to quality of life.

Brailer pointed out that Guernsey Industries then uses an individual’s plan to design a training program that will enable the individual to develop the skills needed to reach the goals listed in his/her plan. If a person’s goal is to make a livable wage, Guernsey Industries will provide job skills training. If individual wants to live independently, Guernsey Industries will help that person develop skills allowing him/her to live on his/her own.

Brailer pointed out that a second part of his job is to identify local businesses willing to work with Guernsey Industries and to offer jobs to individuals who have completed their training. Guernsey Industries will train individuals in the specific skills needed by local companies. Additionally, job coaches will be available to help Guernsey Industries trainees continue their training on the job.

Brailer reassured his audience that Guernsey Industries will continue to contract with local businesses to build items such as pallets, work benches, and reels for packing.
