Byesville Rotary welcomes new member

Pictured: Oziel Jeffries, Byesville Rotary President; Evelyn Spring, Membership co-chair; Jen Navicky; and. Marty Patchen, Membership co-chair.

Reading for next meeting: October Rotarian "Up Front," p. 11, and "World Round-up," p. 14.

Byesville Rotary club members welcome Jen Navicky as a new member. Jen was sponsored by her husband, Dan Navicky, who is also a member of the club. Byesville Rotary is proud to point out that their club is a “family affair.” With the addition of Jen, the club now has 4 couples who both are Rotarians and two members who have children in the Meadowbrook Rotary Interact Club.

Guest speaker, Rusty Roberts, Health Education instructor for the Rolling Hills School district, spoke to the club about efforts to improve the quality of education in Rolling Hills. He pointed out that the district took the initiative to make improvements by accepting the challenges of the “Race to the Top” program. He added that not many school districts in the state chose to accept this challenge. Mr. Roberts credits the staff and administration at Rolling Hills for the improvement.

Mr. Roberts’ contribution to improvements in education at Rolling Hills was the development of a classroom program which uses community-based agencies to expand learning opportunities in the classroom. This classroom program has been nominated twice for the Magna Award which is a national award recognizing outstanding educational practices.

Mr. Roberts pointed out that bringing real-life experiences into the classroom motivates students and inspires them to learn. The classroom program Mr. Roberts designed introduces students to local community-based agencies which are used as a springboard to involve students in real life experiences. Students are motivated to learn because they are developing skills they may need to use as they graduate and move into the world of work.

Families living in the Rolling Hills School district are invited to participate in the program.
