The monthly business
meeting of the Byesville Rotary began with brief reports from the club
treasurer, Phyliss Jeffries, and club president, Dennis Harding. Club members
voted to continue their support for the maintenance of two Dickens characters. During
November and December, the two coal miners will be moved to a location in
downtown Cambridge. After the Dickens Village festival is over for 2013, the
miners will be returned to the Byesville Scenic Railroad Station. Club members
also approved a $100 donation to CTAC.
Chicken BBQ chair, Chuck
Fair, asked members to consider volunteering for a shift at the club’s August
17 chicken BBQ to be held at the Rotary Gazebo on Main Street, Byesville. The
club will be assisted by staff from Guernsey County Developmental Disabilities
and members of the Christian Athletes. Proceeds from the BBQ sales will be
shared with these two organizations.
Harding asked committee
chairs for the District Governor’s visit, Membership, and the Dictionary
Project to hold brief committee meetings. After the meetings, committee chairs gave
summaries of committee decisions.
Nellie Bichard, Reception
Chair, reported that the District Governor and his wife will be visiting the
club during the August 27th weekly meeting. On the evening of August 26, a
reception will be held at the Colonel Taylor Inn. Refreshments will be served.
Harding encouraged members attend the reception. Bichard asked that club
members RSVP to her if they planned to attend either the reception or the
breakfast.
Jim Vaughan, Membership
Chair, encouraged club members to invite prospective Rotary members to the
breakfast meeting He reported that his committee is developing some new
approaches to recruiting and retaining new members.
Sharon Miller, Dictionary
Project Chair, responded to club members concerns that dictionaries are
outdated technology for students by reporting that at least one 3rd
grade teacher has her students use the dictionaries at least once a week. Her
committee has decided to contact the middle school principal for more
information before making a recommendation to the club about continuing or
dropping the dictionary project.
