Byesville Rotarians learned about Guernsey County Board of Developmental Disabilities (GCDD) summer events from Jamie Hopps, the GCDD’s new Public Relations Special Project Coordinator.

Hopps stated that this week the members of the STARs group decided to celebrate the GCDD’s 60th birthday and participate in the 1st annual “Always There Week of Service” by choosing several projects to give back to the community. Their first project was to clean up the Byesville Park and plant flowers in the park’s flower beds.

Hopps pointed out that this group has also chosen to support “Children in Foster Care” by making no-sew blankets for the children. The STARs are looking for blanket sponsors. The cost of a no-sew blanket kit is $20. A group will be gathering at the GC Senior Center to make the blankets. Sponsors are being solicited for donations to support this project. The group’s goal is to make and donate 50 blankets. Call Jamie Hopps at 740-439-4451 to sponsor a blanket.

Other projects planned for the week of July 17-21 are a canned food (for people) and pet food (for the dog shelter) drive, volunteer work at the animal shelter, and a Penny War between the DD departments.

Hopps stated that one of the GCDD’s more popular event—the “Free Inclusive Football and Cheerleading Clinic” will be back July 15. Former NFL players Anthony Griggs (OSU, Philadelphia, Cleveland), Jamar Martin (OSU, Dallas, Miami), and AJ Dalton (Detroit) will be present to teach kids new football skills.

Hopps pointed out that for the first time a cheerleading clinic is being offered. The Cambridge and John Glenn cheerleading coaches and senior cheerleaders will be in charge of this clinic.

Registration forms and instructions for registering for either clinic can be found at www.guernseycountydd.org.

The Byesville Club concluded their meeting by voting to sponsor 2 no-sew blankets. Chuck Fair reminded club members that the annual Changing of the Guard Dinner will be held June 22 and that there will be no meeting on June 20.
