Byesville Rotary introduced to Meadowbrook  DECA

Cathy Hesson, advisor of the Meadowbrook DECA (Distributive Educational Clubs of America), spoke to Byesville Rotary about the goals of this club which focuses on teaching business skills to students. She explained that DECA is an international association of high school and college students interested in careers in business, finance, hospitality, and management. The methods that students learn in the DECA program prepare them to become leaders and entrepreneurs in their chosen field of business.

Hesson stated that DECA teaches students business skills by having the students learn by doing. The Meadowbrook club focuses on business marketing and personal financial literacy. Students do simulations of common business activities or challenges. Students are given a real-life business problem and challenged to use critical thinking skills to solve the problem.

DECA holds competitions between students. These events are considered part of the curriculum and are industry-validated as well as aligned with the National Curriculum Standards in the business career clusters. The competition both a written component such as an exam or report and an interactive component with an industry professional serving as a judge. Hesson is proud of how well her students have done in competitions. One student—Miranda Marscenek--placed 2nd in the international accounting competition. A three-student team placed 7th in international competition in personal finance.

In December and January, her students will be attending competitions being held at Akron University. Later in 2018, club members want to attend an international competition being held in Florida. Hesson said the club has begun fundraising efforts to pay for their trip.

Hesson stated that the Meadowbrook DECA club has been active for 15 years. The club is part of the DECA High School Division and is one of 3,500 high school clubs with a total of 200,000. During their trip to the competitions in Florida, Meadowbrook DECA members will be competing against the best of 200,000 DECA members.
