Byesville Rotary celebrates 2023-24 service year

Byesville Rotary Club celebrated the end of its thirty-seventh year at the Dockside Restaurant, Lake Seneca. Club members, friends and supporters of Byesville Rotary attended.

 Chuck Fair, outgoing president, reviewed the 2023-24 activities which included the annual Christmas Food Basket project and the club’s Scholarship Awards given to graduating students from Meadow Brook. Chuck presented handmade ceramics to Jordi Harding, Jan Wilson, Tanya Hitchens, Shana Fair, Jim Bacos and Dennis Harding in recognition for their contributions to club activities during the year.

 He presented Lisa Groh with the club’s “Rotarian of the Year” service award. Lisa is responsible for writing grants. The most important is the grant supporting the club’s Christmas Food Basket program. Lisa chairs the Membership Committee and organizes activities to build membership in the club. She also ensures club meetings are offered via Zoom and are streamed to FaceBook.

Dylan Perry, Assistant District Governor for Rotary District 6690, conducted the induction ceremony and swore Shana Fair in as the club president for 2024-25. After officially receiving the gavel, Shana presented Chuck with a plaque recognizing him for his year as president.

What a fun party. A Rotarian from a different club in District 6690 who was having dinner at the Dockside stopped by the party to congratulate the club.

Byesville Rotary inducts officers for 2021-22

At their annual Changing of the Guard dinner, club members inducted officers for the coming year and recognized members for service during 2020-2021.

Gary Moll, District 6690 Assistant Governor formally swore in the club’s new president—Lisa Groh, and the directors attending the meeting—Larry Miller and Rhonda Stemmer. They will join Becky Bruner as club directors.

Chuck Fair, outgoing president, presented thank you tokens for services rendered by members during the year. Dennis Harding and Jordi Harding were thanked for their work on organizing and implementing the Christmas Food Basket service project. Shana Fair was thanked for initiating 2 fundraisers supporting the Christmas Food Basket project -- “Stuff Santa’s Stocking” and a Go-Fund-Me effort. Jan Wilson was thanked for her multi-year service as treasurer. Larry Miller was recognized for his work organizing the scholarship golf outing. Jim Bacos was recognized for his multi-year willingness to chair the Scholarship Committee.

 The club’s biggest honor—Byesville Rotarian of the Year—was awarded to Jan Wilson for her multiyear service as club treasurer. She has also served for many years on the Changing of the Guard planning committee and served as grant writer. She has also been active in other projects such as working at Breakfast with Santa and Breakfast with the Easter Bunny that the club holds. Congratulations, Jan.

Byesville Rotary honors two at awards dinner

Byesville Rotary recognized two attendees for their contributions to Rotary at the 2019-2020 Changing of the Guard dinner.

Bob Long was presented with an Honorary Rotarian award in recognition of his long-term contributions and service to Rotary. Long served as president of the Byesville club twice and was treasurer multiple times. The club made him Rotarian of the Year three times in 2000, 2003, and 2007 in recognition of the work he did to implement the Christmas Food Basket service project. Long established the Christmas food program and headed the food basket committee multiple years. In addition to organizing food drives and insuring food baskets were packed he served as the projects primary fund raiser.

Dennis Harding was selected by club members as the 2019-2020 Byesville Rotarian of the Year. He was selected for his willingness to take on the Christmas Food Basket project after Bob Long retired. Harding manages all aspects of the project and has increased outreach to family in need that live in the Rolling Hills School District. This year, the project provided a record number of food baskets to local families.

Club members also swore in officers and board members for the coming year. Chuck Fair will serve as president; Jan Wilson, treasurer, Shana Fair, secretary; Rhonda Stemmer, membership chair; Lisa Groh, grants writer. Board members are Debbie Mead, Becky Bruner, and Rhonda Stemmer.

Shana Fair, outgoing president, summarized club accomplishments for the 2019—2020 year. Two members became Paul Harris Fellows; one earned a Paul Harris sapphire which indicates the member gave an additional $1000 dollars to the Paul Harris fund. The club applied for—and received—two District Grants for a total of $3000. Members held three fundraisers—Stuff Santa’s Stocking, Breakfast with Santa, and Jordi’s Food Pantry Challenge.

Club service projects included making 50 no-sew blankets which were donated to the Guernsey County Children’s Services, held two events—Pints for Polio and Pennies for Polio—to raise money for Rotary’s polio elimination program, provided 198 families with Christmas food baskets, contributed over $2000 to local food pantries, helped make 600 sandwiches for the Salvation Army Brown Bag Lunch program, established an Interact Club at Mid-East, awarded four scholarships to Meadow Brook seniors, and donated $1000 to the Guatemala Literacy Project.

Fair congratulated club members for their efforts and pointed out that in all the club raised and donated about $24,000 during the year.
