Byesville Rotary kicks off Christmas Food Basket fund raising

This is the 39^th year that Byesville Rotary is providing Christmas Food Baskets to members of the Rolling Hills School District community.

On Saturday, September 7, club members kicked off their “Stuff Santa’s Stocking” fund raiser in the intersection of St. Rts. 313 and 285 in Senecaville. Four hours of work resulted in over $2000 in donations. A record for the club.

Providing Christmas Food Baskets for between 150-200 low-income families living in the Rolling Hills School District is the club’s biggest project. Each family receives two boxes of food. One box contains non-perishables. The second contains perishables including a turkey, one dozen eggs, one gallon of milk, one pound of butter, a loaf of bread, and fresh vegetables and fruit. We estimate that we affect up to 800 individuals with this program.

To date, the club has received a $2000 grant from Rotary International District 6690, raised over $2000 with their first “Stuff Santa’s Stocking” fundraiser, and is reaching out to the community for additional support. The club has applied for a second grant and will be holding a second “Stuff Santa’s Stocking” fundraiser on October 12 in Byesville.

 The club estimates about $9000 is needed to meet their goal of feeding 200 families for several meals during the holidays.

Byesville Rotary kicks off fundraising for Christmas Food Baskets

Each year for over 25 years, the Byesville Rotary has provided Christmas Food Baskets for up to 200 families in the Roling Hills School District. To meet this need, the club needs to raise $8000. The club held two “Stuff Santa’s Stocking” fundraisers to meet this need.

 The first was held on Saturday, September 10. Club members stood in the intersection of SR 313 and SR 285 in Senecaville from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm. Some dressed in Santa hats and everyone holding a Christmas stocking as they asked for donations to support the Christmas project.

 The second fundraiser was held in Byesville on October 15 at the intersection of Main and 2^nd Streets in Byesville from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm. All donations weresed to purchase food items for the Christmas Food Basket service project.

Byesville Rotary plans for Xmas Food Basket project

Byesville Rotary has provided Christmas food baskets to residents of the Rolling Hills School District for over 20 years. Chuck Fair, club president, stated, “This year holds extra challenges for our club. Because of COVID-19, we cannot hold our traditional fund raiser—Breakfast with Santa. Because of COVID-19, we expect the need for food baskets will be bigger this Christmas.”

Last year, the club provided 198 food baskets to families in Rolling Hills. This year the club expects to have applications well over 200. To meet this need, the club needs to raise $8000. To meet this challenge the club plans to hold two “Stuff Santa’s Stocking” fundraisers.

The first is planned for Saturday, September 12. Club members will be standing in the intersection of SR 313 and SR 285 in Senecaville from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm. Watch for Santa Claus hats and Christmas stockings.

The second fundraiser will be held In Byesville at the intersection of Main and 2ed. From 9:00 am until 1:00 pm. Please be generous when you see the Santa Stockings. All funds raised will be used to purchase supplies for the Christmas food baskets.

The main source of funding for the food baskets is from the Rotary club efforts and is supplemented by individual donations. A donation of $35 will feed an entire family for several days. The club provides a basket of perishables including a turkey and a basket of non-perishables and canned goods.

Byesville Rotary Kick-off Pennies for Polio Challenge

The Penny War Challenge has begun. Byesville Rotary members are collecting pennies in hopes of winning the trophy again for Meadowbrook. This is second annual “Pennies for Polio Challenge.” The Byesville and Cambridge Rotary clubs are using the challenge to raise monies to fight polio and to see which school—Meadowbrook or Cambridge has the most supporters. The school collecting the most pennies will have the honor of displaying the Pennies for Polio Challenge trophy for the next year. 

For the last year the trophy has proudly resided at Meadowbrook High School. Byesville Rotary expects the competition to be harder fought this year.

The rules are simple: pennies ONLY are counted toward the schools total; silver coins and paper bills are counted against the schools total. Meadowbrook supporters can help Meadowbrook retain the trophy by donating silver coins and paper money to Cambridge. 

What is going to happen to all the donations? It is going to be donated to the Rotary International project to eliminate polio. This highly contagious disease—which prefers to strike at children under 5 and older adults—can paralyze and even kill by attacking a person’s nervous system. There is no cure and recovery can be lengthy. Many people never fully recovery from the paralysis.

Polio can be prevented with a simple inoculation. Rotary, in partnership with the Bill Gates Foundation and the World Health Organization, uses donations to purchase the polio vaccine and vaccinates children around the world. Currently there are only 3 countries in the world where polio occurs

You have never heard of polio cases in the United States? That is because we have eliminated polio in our country. And because we have eliminated the disease, fewer and fewer of our kids are vaccinated against it. That puts our kids at risk if an infected person happens to travel to the US.

A donation to the Pennies for Polio Challenge will help reduce that risk.

We just want your pennies—the ones hiding in your cup holder or laying around your house that aren’t any use to you. It won’t cost you much to make a donation—and both Cambridge and  Byesville Rotarians will thank you for your donation.

Penny donations are being accepted at the Rolling Hills Schools and at the Guernsey County DD.  Watch for collections jars to appear at other locations.
