Byesville Rotary hears about the WWII “Deaf Holocaust”

Pictured: Jamie Hopps, guest speaker, and Chuck Fair, Byesville Rotary President Elect.

Reminder: Byesville Rotary will hold a chicken BBQ Saturday at the Rotary Gazebo Park on Main in Byesville. Sales will start around 9:30am.

Guest speaker at the morning meeting was Jamie Hopps, former Interact member, current Rotary member, and history major attending Ohio State Eastern, Jamie’s topic was the “Deaf Holocaust. “ She explained that while most people know that Hitler tried to eliminate Jews, few realize that people with hearing disabilities were also a target of Hitler’s effort to “purify the German race.” She became interested in the topic while she was taking a sign language class.

Hopps pointed out that one reason few people are aware of the Deaf Holocaust is because deaf people who were sterilized were told that if they spoke about their sterilization, they would be sent to the death camps. As a result, it became part of the culture of a whole generation of people not to speak of their experience.

Hopps explained that like many Germans, the German deaf population originally believed Nazi propaganda and supported the Nazi regime. Some even voluntarily surrendered their infants and young children to a program called “Operation T4” because they thought their children would be cured of their deafness. Unfortunately, the real purpose of “Operation T4” was to kill any child considered “defective.”

During the worst years of the Holocaust, the German government increased their campaign to sterilize anyone who was considered defective. The Nazi definition of defective included people with learning disabilities, schizophrenics, maniac-depressives, epileptics, alcoholics, and anyone with a physical deformity as well as people who were deaf or blind.

Hopps recommended the book, Crying Hand: Eugenics and Deaf People in Nazi Germany, by Horst Biesold to anyone interested in finding out more about this forgotten piece of history.

Chuck Fair, chair of the chicken BBQ committee, reminded club members that the club will be holding its monthly chicken BBQ Saturday, August 17. Volunteers are still needed to help with the BBQ. There will only be one more BBQ held this year.

The club meets 7:30 am every Tuesday at the Stop Nine Senior Center at 60313 (GPS use 60299) Southgate Road, Byesville. Anyone interested in learning more about the Byesville Rotary can call Membership Chair Jim Vaughan, 740-260-2969.

Byesville Rotary develops plans for 2013-2014 club year

The monthly business meeting of the Byesville Rotary began with brief reports from the club treasurer, Phyliss Jeffries, and club president, Dennis Harding. Club members voted to continue their support for the maintenance of two Dickens characters. During November and December, the two coal miners will be moved to a location in downtown Cambridge. After the Dickens Village festival is over for 2013, the miners will be returned to the Byesville Scenic Railroad Station. Club members also approved a $100 donation to CTAC.

Chicken BBQ chair, Chuck Fair, asked members to consider volunteering for a shift at the club’s August 17 chicken BBQ to be held at the Rotary Gazebo on Main Street, Byesville. The club will be assisted by staff from Guernsey County Developmental Disabilities and members of the Christian Athletes. Proceeds from the BBQ sales will be shared with these two organizations.

Harding asked committee chairs for the District Governor’s visit, Membership, and the Dictionary Project to hold brief committee meetings. After the meetings, committee chairs gave summaries of committee decisions.

Nellie Bichard, Reception Chair, reported that the District Governor and his wife will be visiting the club during the August 27th weekly meeting. On the evening of August 26, a reception will be held at the Colonel Taylor Inn. Refreshments will be served. Harding encouraged members attend the reception. Bichard asked that club members RSVP to her if they planned to attend either the reception or the breakfast.

Jim Vaughan, Membership Chair, encouraged club members to invite prospective Rotary members to the breakfast meeting He reported that his committee is developing some new approaches to recruiting and retaining new members.

Sharon Miller, Dictionary Project Chair, responded to club members concerns that dictionaries are outdated technology for students by reporting that at least one 3rd grade teacher has her students use the dictionaries at least once a week. Her committee has decided to contact the middle school principal for more information before making a recommendation to the club about continuing or dropping the dictionary project.

Justice League of Ohio visits Byesville Rotary

Pictured: Catherine Harper Lee, founder of the Justice League of Ohio, and Oziel Jeffries, Speaker Host.

 Attention club members:
Please remember to turn in your Engagement Records to Joe Waske at the next meeting.

Catherine Harper Lee, founder of the Justice League of Ohio, stated that the rights of victims of crime can be overlooked. Ten years ago, when she founded the Justice League, there were many organizations dedicated to protecting rights of defendants, but none to protect the rights of victims.

Harper Lee pointed out that victims have legally defined rights. She stated that there are currently over 100 laws in Ohio which provide specific rights to victims of felony and some misdemeanor crimes. Unfortunately, many victims are not aware of their rights and many justice officials do not have the proper training covering the Ohio laws protecting victims. Additionally, victims must be proactive and ask to exercise certain of the rights guaranteed to them. Harper Lee established the Justice League to ensure that victims of crime know what their rights are and to ensure victims would be protected throughout the criminal justice process...

Harper Lee said that the Justice League of Ohio is a small, non-profit organization with 2 full time staff and 4 volunteers. In the last 10 years, the organization has helped over 870 victims. Many of the victims she deals with are sexually abused children. More about the story of the founding of the Justice League of Ohio can be found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwnQa7yoAGU and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jljf0Uhcan0

The Justice League of Ohio Crime victims’ Rights Legal Clinic provides free legal representation and assistance to crime victims in Ohio. In order to increase awareness of crime victims’ rights, the League also provides free victims’ rights training and technical assistance to various organizations such as hospitals, law enforcement, courts, and community organizations.

Victims can find out more about their rights in the booklet “Picking Up the Pieces” published by the Ohio Attorney General’s office. Victims can get a copy of the booklet by contacting the Justice League of Ohio—614-848-8500, cathyharperlee@tjlo.org --or downloading the booklet at http://www.ohioattorneygeneral.gov/PickingUpThePieces.
