Reading for March 2:
  • February Rotarian, "Bea Shall Overcome," p. 52.

Reminders:

  • Don't forget meat donations next week.
  • Breakfast with the Bunny committee will meet Monday, March 1, 6:30 at People's in Byesville. If you want to help with the project, come to the meeting.
  • The Scholarship committee is looking for volunteers to interview students applying for scholarships. Contact Jim Bakos 740-685-6629 or bakos@cebridge.net

Dr. James Fonseca, Dean of the Ohio University Zanesville Campus (OUZ), updated the Byesville Rotary about current OUZ programs and plans. Dean Fonseca reported that tuition at OUZ is very reasonable. A new program—Access to Success—can provide first-time, full-time freshmen of any age with a tuition waver of up to $3100. More information about this program which runs through the spring of 2012 is available at ouzservices@ohio.edu or 740.588.1439.

This tuition waver means that tuition costs at OUZ are at the same price level as tuition at 2 year and tech colleges. It also means that getting an education at OU Zanesville is a big bargain because Ohio University is rated as one of the top 16 universities in the United States.

Currently, there are about 1500 students registered at OUZ. The campus is homey and friendly. Dean Fonseca stated that class sizes are kept small so that each student can receive the individualized attention associated with a small, liberal arts college.

OU Zanesville is proud of the 55 full-time faculty teaching classes at OUZ. Many are recognized internationally for their research. The Dean is especially proud of the number of women scientists who teach at OUZ. These instructors include a physicist, a biologist, geologist, and anthropologist.

The Dean’s goal is to develop a new site and establish an OU Cambridge Center which will allow OUZ to expand class offerings. OUZ has outgrown the classroom space being used for classes at the Willett-Pratt Center. The Dean stated, “Plans are being developed that will allow OUZ to offer the first two years of coursework at an OU educational center in Cambridge.”

More information about OU Zanesville is available at http://www.zanesville.ohiou.edu/welcome.htm

During the business meeting, club members were invited to join the “Breakfast with the Bunny” planning committee and the Scholarship Committee which will begin interviewing students soon. The club has begun planning its annual health screening. Dalton Summers, Interact advisor, reported that several students from the area will be participating in the “Four-way Speech Contest” which will be held on April 17.

The club’s next meeting will be 7:30 am, March 2, at the Stop Nine Senior Center at 60313 (GPS use 60299) Southgate Road, Byesville. Anyone interested in learning more about the Byesville Rotary can call Membership Chairs Marty Patchen, 740-685-3828, or Larry Miller, 740-439-2767.

Readings for February 9:
  • February Rotarian--"A Day in the Life of Rotary," p. 31.
The monthly business meeting of the Byesville Rotary included an unexpected visit from Jay Jackson, Wal-Mart Assistant Manager. Mr. Jackson presented the club with a donation to support the club’s local service projects.
Club members also voted to send a donation to the Kick Cancer Foundation. This donation will go toward building a Rotary Endowment fund. Interest from the endowment will be given to the James Cancer Center to support research for a cure.
The club president suggested the club participate in Polio Eradication Week which will be February 23-March 2. Member suggestions included providing publicity for the Rotary effort to eliminate polio within the next few years and contributing money to support the effort. A contribution to help pay for the erection of the Byesville Scenic Railway’s Miners Memorial Statue was put on hold until the bronze sculpture is completed. The Golf Outing Committee co-chaired by Chris Morris and Larry Miller will begin planning the Annual Byesville Golf Outing. Proceeds from the outing support the club’s scholarship project.

Club members discussed the possibilities of a new project aimed at improving student health. Several members are working to gather the information needed in order to plan for this type of project.
