Dean of Ohio University Zanesville visits Byesville Rotary

Dr. James Fonseca, Dean of the Ohio University Zanesville Campus (OUZ), updated the Byesville Rotary about current OUZ programs and plans. Dean Fonseca reported that tuition at OUZ is very reasonable. A new program—Access to Success—can provide first-time, full-time freshmen of any age with a tuition waver of up to $3100. This tuition waver means that tuition costs at OUZ are at the same price level as tuition at 2 year and tech colleges. It also means that getting an education at OU Zanesville is a big bargain because Ohio University is rated as one of the top 16 universities in the United States.

Currently, there are about 1500 students registered at OUZ. The campus is homey and friendly. Dean Fonseca stated that class sizes are kept small so that each student can receive the individualized attention associated with a small, liberal arts college.

OU Zanesville is proud of the 55 full-time faculty teaching classes at OUZ. Many are recognized internationally for their research. The Dean is especially proud of the number of women scientists who teach at OUZ. These instructors include a physicist, a biologist, geologist, and anthropologist.

The Dean’s goal is to develop a new site and establish an OU Cambridge Center which will allow OUZ to expand class offerings. OUZ has outgrown the classroom space being used for classes at the Willett-Pratt Center. The Dean stated, “Plans are being developed that will allow OUZ to offer the first two years of coursework at an OU educational center in Cambridge.”

During the business meeting, club members were invited to join the “Breakfast with the Bunny” planning committee and the Scholarship Committee which will begin interviewing students soon. The club has begun planning its annual health screening. Dalton Summers, Interact advisor, reported that several students from the area will be participating in the “Four-way Speech Contest” which will be held on April 17.
